Compensation for Maintenance Worker Hit by Drunk Driver

A substantial compensation settlement has been obtained for a maintenance worker who was severely injured when he was hit by a drunk driver while working at night.

The driver drove around a safety barrier and hit the man, despite the area where he was working being lit and signposted. He was dragged along the road and suffered life-changing injuries, including a serious head injury and multiple broken bones. He was in hospital for several months and underwent multiple surgeries, and both of his legs had to be amputated.

The driver left the scene of the accident without stopping but was arrested. He was prosecuted for driving while above the legal alcohol limit and driving without due care and attention.

A claim was brought against the driver's insurer, which admitted partial liability. Interim payments were secured so that the man could be provided with rehabilitation and specialist prosthetics.

Shortly before his claim was due to come to trial, a settlement was agreed, reflecting his loss of earnings and his future medical and care needs.
