A compensation settlement has been secured for a young man who suffered a life-changing brain injury in a workplace accident.
The man worked as an apprentice electrician. He was working on a building site in windy weather when some flat-pack furniture fell from height, crushing him. He sustained a traumatic brain injury, fractures to his skull and face, and cracked ribs.
He had to be resuscitated twice before being taken to hospital, where part of his skull was removed to reduce pressure on his brain. He was in an induced coma for four days and remained in hospital for about a month. After returning home, he was completely dependent on his parents.
His family sought legal advice and a claim for damages was commenced on his behalf. Interim payments were secured, allowing a comprehensive rehabilitation package to be put in place for him.
After making significant progress, he briefly returned to his job on a part-time basis. However, he had to give up his apprenticeship after suffering seizures and being diagnosed with epilepsy. Fortunately, he was able to find alternative employment.
A settlement of his claim was agreed, which will ensure his ongoing care needs can be met and his family can be provided with support.
