Increase in Probate Application Fee

On 13 July 2026, the fee charged when applying for probate increased significantly, from £300 to £526.

The fee applies where the value of the estate is more than £5,000. There is no fee for estates of £5,000 or less. If probate has already been granted, it costs £22 to make a second application, regardless of the value of the estate.

The government states that the increase accounts for rising inflation as well as investment in delivering an efficient and modern service.

A separate, reduced fee of £2 now applies when copies of probate documents are requested when making the probate application. The cost of obtaining copies after the application has been submitted remains at £16.

The government provides guidance on applying for probate on its website.
