Worker Who Fell From Pylon Secures Eight-Figure Damages

A substantial compensation settlement has been obtained for an electrical linesman who suffered life-changing injuries when he fell from a pylon.

He had attached himself to the pylon using a harness and rope. The strut he was attached to came loose and he fell more than 15 metres to the ground. He suffered a spinal cord injury which left him paraplegic, and also sustained a mild brain injury, injuries to his internal organs and multiple fractures. He spent nearly two months in hospital before being moved to a private rehabilitation facility.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that workers who had previously worked on the pylon had removed a nut connecting the strut to it. The investigation concluded that his employer had failed to take reasonable care of his health and safety.

He brought a claim against his employer, which admitted liability. Interim payments were secured, which paid for his rehabilitation and care and allowed him to purchase specially adapted accommodation.

Medical evidence was obtained and an eight-figure settlement of his claim was agreed. As well as compensating him for his loss of income and ensuring his ongoing medical and care needs can be met, the settlement has allowed him to resume some of his former hobbies and take part in social activities again.
